  23. That's only part of the problem.  We push the central site idea
  24. because -- since we do stand behind our software and do our best to
  25. support it -- we want to make sure that questions really do apply to
  26. our software and not some unknown quantity.  We have no control over
  27. what other sites might distribute -- it might be "customized", outdated,
  28. virus-infected, or who knows what else.

  30. But there's more.  We also need to generate revenue to keep the Kermit
  31. project going.  When you come to the Columbia site by most avenues (most
  32. ftp clients, Web clients, etc), you see our "promotional" messages.
  33. Other sites have no interest in this sort of thing -- they just want to
  34. put ZIP files up for ftp (or on CD-ROMs), period, the end.  Obviously
  35. this not only cuts into our sales, but also increases our support
  36. workload -- not a good situation for a self-funding nonprofit operation
  37. like ours.
